How to Make a Photo Exactly 100 KB

"Photo must not exceed 100 KB." Simple sentence, endless frustration — because a normal phone photo is 3 MB, thirty times over the limit, and most resize apps either overshoot or turn the image into mush.

Here's the clean way to hit the number.

The direct method

1. Open Compress Image to Size.
2. Upload your photo.
3. In Target max size, type 100.
4. Compress and download — the tool brings the file just under 100 KB while protecting sharpness.

That's genuinely it. The same box works for any number: type 50 for a 50 KB limit, 20 for the stricter government forms.

Why your photo is 3 MB in the first place

Phone cameras save huge images because they're built for printing and zooming — 4000×3000 pixels, millions of colours. A form photo will be displayed at roughly business-card size, so 90% of that data is wasted. Compression throws away the excess invisibly; done well, you can't tell the difference at form size.

Keeping it sharp at small sizes

If you're aiming very low (20–30 KB) and the result looks soft, reduce the photo's dimensions too — in the same tool, set Max width/height to 800 or 1024 px. A smaller image compressed lightly always beats a huge image compressed brutally.

And if the form wants MORE than 100 KB?

Some portals set a minimum instead — "size must be greater than 100 KB". Don't try to inflate a tiny file; grab the original photo from your gallery (not the WhatsApp copy, which is pre-shrunk) or re-take it. I wrote a separate piece on this: what "greater than 100 KB" means.

For exam forms specifically
